Cleveland Cavaliers
Thunder Favored to Repeat as Champs, Cavs and Nuggets Trail
As the 2025-26 NBA season approaches, a clear consensus has emerged among the league’s general managers: the Oklahoma City Thunder are expected to defend their championship title. In the latest GM survey conducted by John Schuhmann of NBA.com, a whopping 80% of the executives have endorsed the Thunder as the team most likely to take home the trophy once again.
Following the Thunder in the rankings are the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Denver Nuggets, each receiving 7% of the votes. Notably, the Houston Rockets and New York Knicks garnered some attention as well, but their support was minimal in comparison to the frontrunners. The Thunder, who clinched the championship last season, have their sights set on becoming the first team to win back-to-back titles since the Golden State Warriors achieved the feat in 2018.
However, recent history serves as a reminder that expectations can be misleading. Last season, an overwhelming 83% of GMs predicted the Boston Celtics would successfully defend their title, only to see them fall short in the second round of the playoffs. This unpredictability makes the upcoming season all the more intriguing.
In addition to team rankings, individual accolades were highlighted in the survey. Denver Nuggets’ superstar Nikola Jokic, a three-time MVP, continues to be a dominant force in the league. He received 67% of the votes for the Most Valuable Player for the upcoming season. Beyond the MVP consideration, Jokic was recognized in several categories, including being voted as the best center (97%), the top international player (93%), and the best passer (80%). GMs also acknowledged his basketball IQ and ability to force strategic adjustments from opposing coaches, with 80% and 57% of the votes respectively.
The survey also cast a spotlight on rising talents, with Amen Thompson emerging as a player to watch this season. GMs expressed optimism about his potential impact on the court, indicating a shift in focus towards a younger generation of athletes.
The Thunder’s confidence heading into the season is buoyed by their star-studded roster, which includes a blend of experience and youthful exuberance. Should they manage to navigate the challenges ahead and emerge victorious once again, they would solidify their legacy as one of the modern era’s great teams.
As reported by hoopswire.com, the anticipation surrounding the upcoming season is palpable. With the Thunder leading the pack, the Cavaliers and Nuggets are also gearing up to make a significant impact, setting the stage for an exciting season filled with drama and competitive spirit. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if the Thunder can live up to the expectations, or if another team will rise to the occasion and upend the current narrative.
