The New Orleans Pelicans have officially secured forward Herbert Jones with a lucrative three-year contract extension valued at $68 million, as confirmed by CBS Sports. This new deal adds to his existing contract, bringing the total value to $97 million over five years, and includes a player option for the 2029-30 NBA season.

At just 26 years old, Jones had a challenging season, participating in only 20 games due to a shoulder injury that ultimately required surgical intervention. After being sidelined in January, he was ruled out for the remainder of the 2024-25 season, which limited his contributions on the court. Despite the setbacks, his overall performance in the prior season (2023-24) was noteworthy. That year, he made a significant impact, earning first-team All-Defense honors as the only non-center in the selection—a testament to his defensive prowess and importance to the Pelicans’ lineup.

During the 2023-24 season, Jones averaged 11.0 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.4 steals per game, showcasing his ability to contribute on both ends of the floor. His versatility and defensive skills have established him as one of the league’s top perimeter defenders, making his extension a strategic move for the Pelicans as they aim to build a competitive roster.

Since being drafted in the second round of the 2021 NBA Draft, Jones has made his mark by starting in 231 of the 240 games he has played thus far. His journey from a rookie to a key player highlights his work ethic and dedication, which has not gone unnoticed by the Pelicans’ management. With the offseason in full swing, the Pelicans are clearly prioritizing stability and continuity, particularly after an injury-plagued year for their young forward.

The Pelicans’ commitment to Jones indicates their belief in his potential to bounce back from injury and contribute significantly to the team’s success in the upcoming seasons. With this extension, Jones will be looking to return to form and help lead New Orleans as they seek to improve their standing in the competitive landscape of the Western Conference.

As the 2025-26 season approaches, the Pelicans will be counting on Jones to not only regain his previous form but to also enhance his game, especially on offense, where he can provide additional scoring alongside established stars. With the team’s efforts to build around their young core, the extension of Jones is a clear signal that they are serious about contending in the near future.
